SPORTS DAY 3
There was a loud
report from the starter's pistol, and they were off! We strained our eyes to
distinguish the colures of the Houses on the runners' singlet's; red and blue
seemed to finish neck and neck, nut only the official announcement would tell
us the result.
The runners were taking their places for the 800 meters by the
time the voice came over the loud-speaker, saying that Livingstone had come in
first, Aggrey second. As the races followed each other in quick succession
----
Livingstone winning the 100 meters, Aggrey disqualified in the Hurdles for
knocking too many over, Aggrey breaking a school record in the 1500 meters,
Livingstone coming first and second in the lead, now Livingstone. At one
moment, Sam was jubilant.
At the next I crowed victoriously. By half past five
the excitement and suspense were becoming unbearable. All the field events were
finished except the High Jump, where Boating was still jumping superbly at 1.82
meters, and likely to defeat all his opponents easily.
The score-board read :--
Aggrey 54: Livingstone 61 : Wilber-force 38: Monroe 41. only the last relay
race remained. We were 8 points behind Livingstone. Even with Boating's certain
3 points for the High Jump, we still needed at least five points to gain the
victory.
Everything depended
on the Relay, and I held my breath as the first four runners came up to draw
lots for positions.
Aggrey drew the out
side lane, but Livingstone had the one next to us. There was dead silence as
the four runners got on their marks. Nobody breathed as the starter slowly
commanded : "one your marks --set"; but everybody seemed to jump with
the runners as the pistol went.
Our man had got well off the mark, but, in a
second, the pistol banged again ; the Monroe House runner had "jumped the
gun" and caused a false start. The runners came back to their marks and we
endured the agony of the start all over again.
