SPORTS DAY 2
For the next hour,
we were kept too busy to argue, for we held yards of the colored material while
he decorated the pavilion, which had been erected form bamboo canes and
palm-branches to shelter the more distinguished spectators.
We held hammers,
fetched nails and carried chairs under his directions until we were hot, tired,
out-of-breath and only too glad when the came for us to run up to school and
take a shower before changing into our "whites" for the afternoon's
activities.
Of course, we were
very noisy during the rest-hour that afternoon. Our dormitory prefect gave up
trying to quell our chatter about the afternoon's events and let us go down to
the sports-field at the earliest possible moment. We sat on the grass, in the shade
of some Nim trees, as close to the ropes as we could get, and watched everybody
else arrive.
There were a few boys from neighboring schools, in red or green
blazers, sitting amongst the spectators, but our own seniors, n navy blue
blazers and long white trousers looked far smarter, as they found seats for the
important guests in the pavilion.
The field looked cool and green, with its
fresh white lines of paint curving round for the racing track, the high white
lines of the pole Vault and High Jump, and the important score-board, opposite
the pavilion, on which was already registered : agley (red)--18 : as the
athletes began to assemble at the edges of the field, we all watched our
favorites limbering up, swinging their arms, running on the spot and generally
preparing for the afternoon's work.
The
centre of attraction, of course, was Boating, who had actually been to
Cardiff to take part in the Empire Games, and had a very smart blue track-suit.
We all cheered him when he appeared, and
I was very glad he belonged to Agley.
A few minutes later, the
Headmaster appeared with the lady who was to present the prizes, the march-past
began, and soon the first runners were on their marks for the 100 meters.'
